This note presents a study on the trends in voter turnout in European Parliamentary (EP) elections from 1979 to 2009. Finding a gradual decline in voter turnout for this period, the author investigates possible reasons for this trend. He also compares his results to turnout trends in EU member states in order to determine whether the decline in voter turnout pertains exclusively to the EP elections or is characteristic of elections in general.
