This note proposes a participatory approach to housing design and delivery as a strategy for generating adequate housing in African cities. The author argues that residents ought to be engaged in the planning, design, and construction of houses, as well as in the management of the neighborhoods those structures constitute. He also reviews the role both future residents and architects should play in each of these stages.
