This brief discusses the potential contribution of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) to the EU’s energy security. The author first highlights the events that have led the EU to place greater emphasis on its energy security. He then assesses the viability of including oil and gas in the TTIP and considers the hurdles that may impede energy exports from the US to Europe. He concludes that the US has prospects as a potential alternative supplier of both oil and gas to Europe, but warns that the TTIP may not be the fastest vehicle for ensuring the EU’s energy security.
