This paper examines the history of international organizations concerned with advancing international development. In particular, it examines the role played by the Bretton Woods organizations, the UN system, regional development banks, development foundations and other development actors. The authors argue that in the first decades of the 21st century, the system of international developmental organizations has significantly changed due to 1) the emergence of sustained economic success in the developing world and 2) the international financial and economic crisis that has gripped much of the industrialized world since 2008.
