This note discusses the state of EU-Brazil diplomatic relations. It starts by outlining the strategic interests both parties have for collaborating, including Brazil’s status as an emerging power and its influence in Latin America. It then reviews the history of their bilateral relations between 1960s and 2014, with a particular focus on the 2007 EU-Brazil Strategic Partnership. The author also addresses the state of trade, energy and sustainable development, as well as other relations between the EU and Brazil. Finally, he examines some of the main disagreements that prevent further EU-Brazil cooperation as well as their key areas of convergence.
