This commentary examines how the European parties’ unofficial nomination of their own candidates for the May 2014 European Parliament elections, their use of televised presidential debates and social media, as well as candidates’ increased publicity could help bring European politics to a broader audience. According to the author, these efforts could however also provoke a disturbance in the institutional balance between the European Parliament and the European Commission.
