This paper examines several aspects of the civil war in Syria. These include 1) the underlying causes of the war; 2) the stance the Assad regime has taken toward the conflict and how it interacts with both internal and external actors; and 3) the effect Islamist fighters are having on the conflict. The author finishes by recommending some policies on how the international community can help end the war.
