This paper discusses Russia's changing policies towards Central Asia. It begins with an overview of the significance this region has had for Moscow from Tsarist Russia up until 2000. It then discusses the goals of Russian policies in the region, the means employed to achieve them, and Moscow's relations with individual countries. Subsequently, the author focuses on the multilateral policy adopted by Russia to secure its influence over the region through involvement in regional organizations and integration efforts. Finally, he discusses perspectives for the region in the context of the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in 2014.
