This paper discusses national unity and the prospects for internal division in Ukraine in the aftermath of the Maidan protests. To do this, it examines the historical origins of Ukraine’s internal diversity and shows how this diversity has changed with the emergence of the independent Ukrainian state. Subsequently, it looks at the impact of the ongoing protests on the sense of civil unity in Ukraine and discusses the political significance of the proposal to federalize the country. The final part considers Russia's position and the implications a divided Ukraine would have for Russia.
