This paper discusses the breakdown of the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks led by US Secretary of State Kerry in March 2014 and the mistakes which led to their failure. The author then comments on President Mahmoud Abbas’s attempts to return the Gaza Strip, currently governed by Hamas, to the control of the Palestinian Authority and the chances of this happening. He concludes by emphasizing the US' responsibility to prevent further deterioration by devising a new peace process with a different strategy.
