This paper argues that it is wrong to just assume that it is beneficial for the US to maintain its alliances in Asia. In order to demonstrate that this is the case, the author provides several possible reasons why these alliances might have a negative impact on security in Asia and on the US in general. He argues that it may well be the case that the benefits of the alliances outweigh the cost, but that this must be proven.
