This brief discusses the economic and energy consequences of the 2014 Ukraine crisis for European countries. The author argues that if Ukraine continues to disintegrate and the EU and the US escalate their sanctions on Russia, the economies of all parties involved will suffer. He highlights the specific consequences such moves would have for the economies of Ukraine, Russia and the European countries as well as their impact on Europe's energy supplies. He recommends that Europe should 1) de-escalate the crisis; 2) reframe its energy policy; and 3) use this opportunity to develop closer energy links with southern rim Mediterranean countries.
