This paper discusses Central European states’ success in implementing the Nuclear Security Summit’s (NSS) goals. The author first presents the origins and goals of the NSS and the main features of the nuclear security regime. She then reviews each country’s (Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Ukraine) achievements in adhering to the global nuclear security architecture, using the multilateral tools available, protecting nuclear and radiological materials, combating illicit trafficking and strengthening their nuclear security culture. She concludes that they have performed remarkably well, even before the NSS, and discusses the reasons for this high involvement.
