This brief argues that Germany’s policy towards Russia is too idealistic and not compatible with Putin’s realpolitik towards its post-Soviet neighbors. The author argues for a new German foreign policy towards Eastern Europe which should be cooperative without being deferential towards the Kremlin. He also contends that European partners should capitalize on Berlin’s new distance from Moscow to push Germany to take a leading role in common Russia and Eastern Partnership policies.
