This commentary discusses the prospective outcome of the May 2014 presidential elections in Egypt. The authors argue that the repression of opposition parties in the country, including the Muslim Brotherhood, indicates that the country is once again returning to an autocratic system of governance. Despite this development, however, joint sanctions by the EU and the US could provide a powerful incentive for a more conciliatory approach towards political opposition for the Egyptian government.
