This monograph discusses the future role and structure of the US Army in East Asia and how it can best serve US national security interests. Overall, the author argues that the US Army should reappraise the nature of its presence in East Asia, especially in light of changes in the strategic context of the region and the high recurring costs of deploying US Army forces for security cooperation activities there. He also examines what could be involved in a reconfiguration of the Army's presence in East Asia and suggests that even though there may be some major challenges in this process, they are not insurmountable.
