In light of the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014, this article examines some of the enduring myths and misunderstandings regarding NATO's relationship with Russia. The author first examines the myth that NATO had promised not to enlarge its borders further than the reunified Germany and the myth that Russia, under president Yeltsin, had been offered NATO membership. He then examines some of the problems NATO has had in expanding into Central and Eastern Europe and how the Alliance can seek to re-establish a workable relationship with Russia.
