This paper discusses some of the territorial disputes over the waters and islands of the South China Sea. More specifically, it looks at 1) which territories are involved; 2) the 9-Dash line which China uses to demarcate its maritime territorial claims in the region; 3) the role resources play in the disputes; 4) what is being done to resolve the situation; 5) how tensions are affecting trade routes in the area; and 6) what the disputes mean for the US pivot to Asia.
