The paper examines the transformation of the US military presence in Europe in the early 2010s as well as how Washington and NATO have responded to Russia's annexation of Crimea in early 2014. The authors also discusses US President Barack Obama's June 2014 initiative to increase US defense spending on Europe and to create a European Reassurance Initiative (ERI), which would augment the capabilities and readiness of US forces in Central and Eastern European NATO member states.
