This paper provides a typology of US strategic partnerships with other nations, it analyzes the motives behind them, and it evaluates their usefulness. The typology, incidentally, is based on substantive content and the relative balance among a strategic partnership's different elements, which can range from political and military cooperation to economic coordination and even ties with non-state actors.
