This brief examines the nature of the threat that The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, (ISIS) poses to US interests and security. The author also examines some of the options which the US could pursue to defeat ISIS. Overall, the author argues that only Syrian moderates can defeat ISIS, as long as the US supports them, and that the only long-term solution to this militant group is a functional and fair political order in Syria.
