This paper discusses the importance of Rare Earth Elements (REE) as a critical strategic resource in Asia. The author examines 1) what REEs are; 2) applications of REEs in defense technologies; 3) how they are priced; 4) how they may be extracted in the future through deep seabed mining; and 5) some of the environmental issues surrounding their extraction.
