This paper provides an overview of the various issues associated with the exploration and extraction of shale gas resources in the UK. In particular it examines 1) the hydraulic fracturing process used to extract the gas; 2) how much shale gas there is in the UK and the economic implications of this; 3) the regulatory regime around the exploration and extraction of the gas, such as planning permission and access rights; and 4) some of the environmental considerations, such as greenhouse gas emissions and seismic events.
