This paper provides an overview of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), as well as the militant group's takeover of Iraqi territory in June 2014. More specifically, the authors summarize the group’s links to Al-Qaeda, its financing, its objectives and treatment of minorities. They then go on to explain the course of events which led to the group's assault on Mosul, the Iraqi government's and international community's response to the assault, as well as the possibility of a NATO Intervention in Iraq.
