This brief discusses Brazil’s domestic challenges and their impact on its international standing in the context of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The author maintains that despite the country’s outstanding economic prosperity and social progress in the past decade, it has not been able to raise its standing on the international stage. He explains that this is due to such factors as continuing socioeconomic challenges, high levels of dissatisfaction with the government, and president Rousseff’s limited interest in foreign policy. The author also discusses what he believes Brazil should do if it wishes to enhance its role on the world stage.
