This paper outlines Japan’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions mitigation trajectory. It specifically explores how Japan’s GHG emission reduction target announced in Warsaw in 2013 compares to the country’s emission reduction pledge of 2009, and explains how the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 and consequent policy developments have and continue to shape the country's emission reduction targets. In concluding, the author also assesses the achievability of the Warsaw emission reduction pledge.
