This paper explores the relationship between religious freedom and equality in theory and practice in majority Orthodox countries. It starts by discussing the extent to which Russia, Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania, which have established or privileged religions, uphold the protection of religious freedom and the promotion of pluralism. It then examines what the role of the European Court of Human Rights can be in influencing state neutrality in matters of religion. Finally, it discusses the importance of national identity as a key factor in the problematic relationship between religious freedom and equality.
