This paper discusses the implications of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham’s (ISIS) advances in Syria and Iraq for the status quo in the Middle East. The author analyzes the interests and actions of players in the region, including Iran, Iraq, Syria, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the US and Russia. He also argues that ISIS’ control over territories in Syria and Iraq will be temporary, but that a new regional order will develop as a result of continuing conflict.
