This publication analyzes the final conclusions of the United Kingdom’s Trident Commission. (Note: The cross-party commission was set up in 2011 to examine the UK's existing nuclear weapons policy and the possible renewal of its nuclear capabilities.) Ultimately, the commission members spoke out of both sides of their mouths -- i.e., they concluded that Great Britain should retain nuclear weapons as a deterrence against hostile nuclear-armed states and as a contribution to NATO, but they also insisted that the British government should be at the forefront of global efforts to promote nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
