This publication presents a collection of background papers that informed the deliberations of the Trident Commission, an independent, cross-party commission that examined the UK’s nuclear weapons policy and the renewal of its nuclear capabilities. The topics covered by the papers include the security threats the UK faces; the effectiveness of nuclear deterrence; the financial costs of the UK's Trident renewal project; the possibility of the UK adopting threshold status - the ability of a state without deployed nuclear weapons to produce them within a matter of months or years; and a number alternative platforms and delivery systems for a British nuclear deterrent.
