This commentary discusses the political and economic situation in Belarus in the context of the 2014 Ukraine crisis. The author argues that Belarusian authorities remain loyal to the Kremlin because of their strong political, military and economic ties to Russia. Yet, at the same time, they are looking to warm relations with the EU. To facilitate the latter, the EU should develop a new model for its relations with Belarus, one that will take into consideration the protection of human rights as well as economic and regional cooperation.
