This paper gauges the prospects of South Africa, Nigeria, Angola and Kenya ascending into 'emerging power' status. After first reviewing the economic and political resources the countries have to work with, the paper concludes that they’re not ready to qualify as emerging states. They still need, for example, to consolidate their democracies, fight corruption and diversify their economies.
