This paper discusses the economic and political challenges faced by newly elected Egyptian President El-Sisi. It argues that Egypt's economic recovery and political stability are both necessary and interdependent, but will be difficult to achieve simultaneously. This is because El-Sisi's unpopular austerity measures may trigger more protests. The author also examines some of the economic and political measures El-Sisi could pursue, highlighting the need for him to forge a new, broader social coalition. However, he also warns that this will not be an easy task, as it requires his core supporters to make important concessions.
