This paper provides an overview of key issues and developments in attempts to gain independence for Catalonia from Spain. It includes brief examinations of 1) the history of the Catalan parliament; 2) this parliament's elections of 2010 and 2012, which led to a secessionist majority; 3) how the issue of Catalan independence is viewed from Madrid; 4) the proposals which have been made regarding a referendum on independence and what public opinion polls say about its potential result; and 6) the potential for an independent Catalonia to become a member of the EU.
