This paper discusses the potential of produced water, generated by oil and gas production, for sustainable water strategies and management practices in the United States. The author discusses key insights and trends in the pursuit of sustainable energy and water policies in the US, and points out the considerations and barriers for public policymakers developing regulatory activities relating to produced water in the broader US energy security context.
