This brief addresses political parties in South East Europe and the role they play in their countries’ democratic consolidation and EU integration processes. It starts by outlining the deficiencies in Western Balkans and South Eastern European party systems, highlighting that they have caused citizens to have a negative attitude towards their politicians. The author then offers recommendations for the political parties, the EU and other international stakeholders on how to improve the consolidation and development of democratic institutions in the region.
