This edition of the RAD features three articles on the Caucasus region. The first one highlights both the similarities and differences between the North and South Caucasus. The second article examines the on-going Salafist insurgency in Dagestan, which partially involves a struggle against established religious leaders who are backed by the Russian state. The last piece then analyses how Cossacks who are ‘registered for state service’ are starting to play an increasing role in both Russian domestic and foreign policy-making, and assesses the possible impacts of this heightened involvement.
