This note discusses the creation of the New Development Bank (NDB) at the July 2014 BRICS summit in Brazil. The author first reviews the bank's objectives and enthusiasm surrounding its creation as well as concerns raised and then outlines the reasons why this is a historically notable event. He concludes that despite the strategic and operational challenges it faces, the NDB will confer on the BRICS grouping the institutional legitimacy it has been searching for.
