This commentary discusses the implications of extending the P5+1/Iran negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program until November 2014. The author first provides an overview of Iran's nuclear program as well as the negotiations, including the interests each party has in them. He then discusses the economic and geopolitical context in the Middle East and suggests that even if an agreement was reached, it would not lead to an automatic normalization of relations between Iran and the West, nor would it solve the geopolitical tensions in the region. Finally, he provides recommendations for the EU on how it should support the negotiation process.
