This paper looks at the divide among Central and Eastern European (CEE) NATO members over the need for a stronger NATO deterrence and defense policy for the region following Russia’s intervention in Ukraine in 2014. Overall, the author argues that while Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Romania have called for a strengthening of NATO’s deterrence measures, other CEE states have not as they do not feel as threatened and because they do not wish to harm their relations with Moscow.
