This paper explores the possibility of a future strategic partnership between China and South Korea, which it believes has actually begun. Beijing’s seeming motive for such a partnership is to prevent the growth of a trilateral, containment-centered alliance between the US, Japan and South Korea. In the case of Seoul, its apparent motive is to exploit China’s good offices in order to deepen ties with North Korea, and ultimately reunify the peninsula.
