This paper examines Algeria’s potential to be a reliable energy and security partner for the EU. To do this, it analyzes the situation in Algeria following the reelection of Abdelaziz Bouteflika as president for a fourth term in 2014 as well as the economic and security threats facing the country. The author argues that Algeria’s sharp rise in domestic energy consumption and concurrent decline in gas production suggest that the country will not be a reliable energy partner. Furthermore, he maintains that growing domestic tensions could lead to upheaval and destabilization, preventing Algeria from being the kind of security partner that Europe wants.
