This paper examines how peace mediators and mediation teams can increase participation in peace negotiations to ensure more sustainable peace agreements. To this end, the author examines 1) who to include in peace processes; 2) why broadening participation matters; 3) the opportunities and value added by broadened participation; and 4) potential challenges related to increasing participation and how to address them. He also gives and overview of nine participation models.
