This paper explains why and how conflict analysis can help third parties resolve armed conflicts. In doing so, it also highlights what the third party’s analysis should focus on – i.e., the context and actors involved; the design and sequencing of the mediation process; the problems inherent in particular negotiations, including the ‘comparative practices’ involved, and the extant roadblocks to implementing peace.
