This brief discusses education in refugee camps in Dadaab, Kenya which were established in 1991 for Somali citizens fleeing conflict in their country. The author examines the origins and evolution of the camps, as well as conditions in them and advocates moving from humanitarian aid to longer-term development activities there, focusing on the importance of education in emergencies. Finally, she provides recommendations for the UNHCR and NGOs working in Dadaab on how to improve education in the camps.
