This commentary examines the deal made between Gazprom and China National Petroleum Corporation in 2014 that will see Russian gas supplied to China. Among other issues, the author examines the negotiation process that led to the deal; how much gas will be supplied; and what the agreement means for both countries. He argues that the deal seems to be more favorable to China than Russia and that the contract at present is mainly important Moscow for political reasons. He also points out that it is unclear if the contract will bring economic benefit to Gazprom and that the financial aspects of the project have not yet been agreed upon.
