This paper argues that the 2014 Ukraine crisis has led to the end of the post-Cold War status quo in Europe and to a US-Russian rivalry that reflects the competition for power between Russian and British Empires in 19th century. To make this argument, the author analyzes 1) the origins of the Ukraine crisis; 2) Russia's policies towards Ukraine; 3) how the West responded to Russia's annexation of Crimea; 4) Russia and the West's attempts at rapprochement with one another since the Cold War; and 5) the wider geopolitical context surrounding the Ukraine crisis.
