This paper examines the role the US can play in dealing with the violent sectarian and religious conflict in Iraq in 2014. More specifically, the author 1) looks at US interests in the Iraq; 2) current US policy for dealing with conflict in Iraq; and 3) the scope for expanding the US' role in thwarting the military advances of the Islamic State (IS) without committing ground troops.
