This bulletin examines the 2014 national presidential election in Turkey and its impact on the country's political system. The author warns of the political risks Turkey faces, as the current constitution is inadequate in setting out the necessary checks and balances for a strengthened president, which could lead to a power-clash between the president and prime minister. Given this, the author suggests that the EU should use economic incentives to influence the new political system developing in Turkey and rectify this political imbalance.
