This monograph examines Russia’s attempts to counterbalance growing American involvement in the Caspian Sea region. More specifically, it 1) examines Russian threat perceptions in the area and how they might impact other actors; 2) analyzes the motives behind the increasing competition for influence in the region, particularly within the energy sector; and 3) assesses the security-related consequences of Russia extending its suzerainty in its near-abroad.
